FOUNDER AND BENEFACTOR OF THE HAROLD BUCHNER SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Harold passed away July 9th, 1974, after a brief illness. He left a bequest of $2,500, in his will, to the Hamilton 5 Pin Bowlers Association, to establish a Scholarship Fund for graduating Y.B.C. Seniors, to assist with their post secondary education. The Association appointed Evelyn Wood and Fred Smith to administer the fund. Soon after the fund was activated in 1979, Bob Coulter became an integral part of this committee.
Harold served on the Hamilton 5 Pin Bowlers Association Board of Directors from 1967 to his passing in 1974. His initial involvement was as House Councillor at Westdale Lanes where he was also very involved with their Youth Bowling program. In 1970, he was elected 2nd Vice President of the Association. 1973 saw Harold elected to a 2 year term as President, which, unfortunately, he was unable to complete.
In 1971, he was elected to the Ontario 5 Pin Board of Directors and chaired the Lane Standards and Specifications Committee, which laid the ground work for todays Lane Certification program.
Harold was also a member of the Master Bowlers Association, Teaching Division for 8 years and was a Certified Instructor.
The Scholarship Fund has been supplemented over the years, by Tournaments, grants from Kids Help Phone.
To the end of the 2006/2007 season, the Fund has assisted 59 young bowlers from this area with more than $35,000 towards their post secondary educations.
Harold Buchner has been a true friend to the Hamilton 5 Pin Bowling Community.
THANK YOU HAROLD
